Sweetener Update

The artificial sweetener aspartame (sold as Equal and Nutra- Sweet) is a diabolical poison, no doubt about it, confirmed by new evidence. In 2005, scientists in Italy reported a rigorous three-year study on 1,800 rats concluding, “Aspartame causes significant increases in lymphomas/leukemias and is a multipotential carcinogen.” The findings were ignored by health officials in both Europe and the U.S. But on May 14, 2009, the National Cancer Institute confirmed the link between formaldehyde, one of the breakdown products of aspartame, and cancer, reporting a 37 percent increase in death risk from lymphoma and leukemia in workers exposed to formaldehyde (doorway.com, May 27, 2009). The industry knows it has a problem with aspartame and is actively seeking a replacement. Ajinomoto, a leading producer of aspartame, has asked the FDA for approval of a new no-calorie sweetener derived from the same amino acids as aspartame plus vanillin (artificial vanilla) called Advantame (www.foodnavigator-usa.com, April 8, 2009). The company notes that the sweetener “blends very well with sugar and high fructose corn syrup.” The main alternative sweetener, Splenda (made from chlorinated sugar), has its own dangers. A recent study shows that Splenda has a negative effect on gut flora. Subjects at Duke University took various doses of Splenda over a twelve-week period. Test showed numerous adverse effects on gut flora. Even twelve weeks later, levels of some of good flora were still depressed (J Toxicol Environ Health A. 2008;71(21):1415029). The latest news is that sewage treatment fails to remove sweeteners from waste water. Researchers detected acesulfame, cyclamate, saccharine and sucralose downstream of sewage treatment plants. Manufacturers are wringing their hands—not out of concern that the sweeteners may do harm, but because the findings “might become a primary issue for consumer acceptance” (www.foodnavigator.com, June 18, 2009).

AMRAP in 3 minutes push-ups- 47 did 35 last time.

Thanks for Todd being there to push me. Didn't eat much today and was on my feet all day working in a store. Very tough workout.

Hello from Las Vegas! I am happy to say that I dragged my tired butt down to the cardio room and ran my little heart out at the highest speed/incline level I could maintain (6/6) for 15 minutes and then I thought I might actually fall off the machine. Not exactly an OPT workout, but...

We miss you guys. Looking forward to seeing Gino and Darren tomorrow. Ciao!

This was a tough workout as I was very stiff from my workout yesterday.

Increase in everything despite some sore legs from Monday, except, for my favourite standing press. My goal is get at least 9 reps once on the standing press.

So I have tried two work out since hurting my back:

On Monday:
5 rnds for time:
40 walking lunges
20 push ups

Time: 13:25.... though I didn't take that much time off I felt much stronger doing my push ups this time around

On Tues:

200 jump rope
25 hanging knee raises
150 jump rope
35 push press- 45lb bar
100 jump rope
45 anchored sit ups
50 jump rope

Time: 11:20...again though time did not change much, I did feel abit better about this one as opposed to the last try.

Still need to be careful of the back...

All the way from India local time 1:23 pm- my hometown time 1:00am= really felt the time difference in the workout today.
What an experience the hotel has a really nice gym with lots of weights, a rower, treadmills, all for free..... all men and then I walk in! like flies on shit let me tell you! Hello Mam can i help you.... I say "i'm ok" five minutes late another dude comes up Hello Mam can I help you.... "I say once again I'm ok" I show them my workout after I did a row and they never bothered me again. HEHE culture shock for both parties!

Rowed 2000 meters 8:30 and this girl trainer made me stop to say my back wasn't straight! Was't happy about that. Not part of my workout, but after travelling and sitting for 26 hrs needed to get moving.
